ESPECIAL VMA 1987: O recorde de Peter Gabriel

Realizado em 11 de setembro de 1987 no Anfiteatro Universal, em Los Angeles, a 4° edição do VMA entrou na história da premiação com o roqueiro britânico Peter Gabriel recebendo o maior números de indicações, pelo acréscimo da categoria "Melhor Vídeo de um filme" e pelo último ano do Prêmio Especial de Reconhecimento. Assim como no ano anterior, o VMA foi apresentado pelos Vjs da MTV Downtown Julie Brown, Carolyn Heldman, Kevin Seal, Michael Tomioka e Dweezil Zappa.

Antes de Lady Gaga se tornar a dona do recorde de maior indicações em uma edição do VMA de 2010 com treze indicações, Peter Gabriel foi o primeiro a ter esse recorde ao receber 12 indicações em 1987. O ex-líder da banda Genesis ganhou 10 das 12 nomeações que concorreu, incluindo Vídeo do Ano e o Vanguard Award.

Curiosamente, a diva Cher estava presente nos dois VMAs em que Peter Gabriel e Lady Gaga receberam o recorde de indicações com um visual muito semelhante. Será que Cher é a dona da MTV? -q 

Em 1987, o VMA premiou Peter Gabriel e o diretor Julien Temple com o Video Vanguard Award pela contribuição cultural com seus vídeoclipes. Já Elton John e Bernie Taupin receberam o último Prêmio Especial de Reconhecimento.
