ESPECIAL VMA 1989: Paula Abdul e Madonna são as maiores vencedoras e George Michael recebe o Vídeo Vanguard Award

Realizado mais uma vez no Anfiteatro Universal, em Los Angeles, e apresentado pela segunda vez consecutiva por Arsenio Hall, o Video Music Awards de 1989 foi uma edição de novidades com novas categorias sendo adicionadas a premiação (Melhor Vídeo de Heavy Metal, Melhor Vídeo de Rap, Melhor Vídeo Dance e Melhor Vídeo Moderno) e George Michael recebendo o Vídeo Vanguard Award.

Madonna e Paula Abdul foram as grandes vencedoras da noite, cada uma levou quatro troféus pra casa, seguidas pelo grupo Living Colour, vencendo três astronautas. Entretanto, Michael Jackson foi o artista que mais recebeu indicações em 1989, recebendo 9 para dois de seus vídeos: 6 para "Leave Me Alone" e 3 para "Smooth Criminal". Infelizmente, Michael só ganhou um na categoria Melhor Efeitos Especiais.

Já o "Vídeo do Ano" foi dado para Neil Young com "This Note's for You", escolha considerada controversa até hoje já que Madonna concorreu com a épica "Like A Prayer", que de consolação levou o astronauta pela escolha da audiência.

Andrew Dice

A polêmica da noite ficou por conta de Andrew Dice Clary, que transformou sua aparição para promover o filme "The Adventures of Ford Fairlane" em um verdadeiro show de palavrões. Sua atitude foi tão criticada que a MTV decidiu banir permanentemente a presença dele na emissora.

A entrega do Vídeo Vanguard Award é sempre um momento fantástico, mas a entrega do prêmio em 89 foi pra lá de especial. Madonna, homenageada em 1986, acompanhada de suas dançarinas, apareceu no palco fumando, enquanto discursava e anunciava George Michael como o vencedor do Vanguard Awards. Nem preciso dizer que foi polêmico e épico! Confira:

Parte do discurso de Madonna foi uma cantada. "George, I want your sex", disse a cantora em referência ao hit do cantor britânico. George, que ainda não era assumido, agradeceu a homenagem da rainha do pop com um beijo.
